As a certified WBE in the infrastructure industry, we know firsthand that determination matters. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau, women make up just over 11% of the construction workforce, and women-owned firms account for only about 13% of construction businesses. These statistics underscore the significance of celebrating leaders who continue to break barriers and inspire the next generation.

Alpha 3 was honored to attend The Alliance for Action’s 6th Annual Salute to Women in the Construction Industry Awards, where five remarkable women whose leadership is shaping the future of utilities, organized labor, healthcare, construction management, and clean energy.

Congratulations to Natalie Chesko (Aqua NJ), Kathy Kronberger Press (Women’s Apprentice Committee for Plumbers & Pipefitters UA Local 322), Linda Corso (Professional Women in Construction New Jersey Chapter and Turner Construction Company), Lauren Curcio-Thomas, PMP (PSEG), and Julie Herb, CRE (Virtua Health).

Each honoree shared an inspiring story about their career journey and the people who encouraged them along the way. One story that particularly resonated was Kathy’s, one of the first women in Local 322, her discovery of an essay she wrote years ago in high school.  The essay was about women in construction; it simply asked the question “why not”? That mindset, coupled with a resounding determination to pursue their goals and overcome obstacles, was a common thread among all the honorees. That along with the positive influence of parents and mentors.  It was also inspiring to see leaders supported by their current colleagues, spouses, children and friends.

Natalie Chesko’s message, “Your voice matters, your contribution matters,…” captured the spirit of the event. It was especially meaningful to see the next generation represented, as one attendee brought his high school junior daughter and her friend to experience this inspiring celebration. The room was filled with positivity, support, and encouragement, and everyone left feeling a little more inspired than when they arrived.

Again, congratulations to the honorees.
